Un graveur/lecteur qui fonctionne sans problème sous Linux (Debian Jessie). Il est rapporté par le kernel comme étant un « ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U » la mécanique étant celle d’un « Portable Super Multi Drive / Hitachi-LG Data Storage Inc (idVendor=0e8d, idProduct=1887) ». Petit doute au déballage, sur le CD livré avec (pour Windows comme il se doit) il est indiqué « firmware upgrade ». Étant sous Linux, je n’ai pas vérifié s’il y avait effectivement une mise à jour sur le CD ni même si elle est nécessaire.
La première impression est assez plaisante : le produit est élégant, avec sa face supérieure brillante et légèrement gaufrée (en relief). La base est moins grande que la face supérieur. Donc, de fait, les quatre pans latéraux sont inclinés, ce qui affine un peu l’allure générale du lecteur.
Comme la plupart des produits de ce type, le graveur est livré avec un câble mini-USB « en Y » – avec une prise USB-A supplémentaire pour permettre de le connecter simultanément à deux ports USB de l’ordinateur afin de fournir la puissance nécessaire (5V sous 2A, soit 10W max. annoncés). Pour ma part, en lecture, je n’ai eu aucun souci en ne branchant que la première prise USB. Je n’ai pas tenté le diable lors des gravures et j’ai systématiquement connecté les deux.
Toujours est-il que le lecteur fonctionne vite et bien. Lors de l’utilisation, il n’est pas toujours très discret. Ainsi, de façon curieuse, lors de la copie de DVD Vidéo, seule la lecture de la première couche a été bruyante, la lecture de la seconde couche étant incomparablement plus silencieuse – mais celle-ci s’est faite à une vitesse moindre(moins de 5MB/s contre plus de 6MB/s).
La mécanique et la construction semblent raisonnablement robuste. Entendez par là, comparables à d’autres produits de ce type. Maintenant, c’est clairement un produit à manipuler avec un peu de délicatesse. Sur mon exemplaire, il y a un quelques frottements lorsque l’on referme le tiroir ce qui fait un peu tourner le disque sur le plateau. J’aurais tendance à considérer cela comme un défaut de jeunesse, et j’imagine que cela devrait s’arranger après quelques semaines d’utilisation une fois que les pièces neuves auront pris un peu d’usure. Mais à surveiller tout de même.
Bref, un bon lecteur, séduisant, d’une marque connue (Asus / Hitashi) et qui fait ce qu’on lui demande. Le tout pour un prix raisonnable. Même si en ce qui me concerne, j’aurais volontiers accepté un produit moins esthétiques si cela m’avait fait économiser quelques euros.

From photo, ot looked a bit fragile to me but when it reached to my hands, when I started to work, it is a real good thing. Remember the port connector is not so long. I wish if it had a little more writing speed. No other complaints yet.

The product in general very good in making and reading CD & DVD but the serial number for regeneration online is unveiled for me it’s not big issue but most be valid for the product for all users

I got this external DVD writer which is super light, energy efficient and drives through USB power of your PC/Laptop.
It is made in Singapore though marked as country of origin as china may be due to strong pressure tactics of china on neighbouring countries.

The product came with the worse state of packing. There was no outer packing and even the ends from where the product is taken out was not taped and was about to fall apart. I am surprised how the product reached me without falling off the package and in one piece.
However not withstanding that the product worked well and can read write DVD and CD with ease. The software CD provided with it has all software with limited features and one has to buy the software for full additional function. The Asus Nero Backitup programme does not register as The serial number must have elapsed being of 2017 vintage.

Nu laptops geen DVD speler meer hebben zit je soms met een probleem om een CD of DVD te kunnen afspelen. Deze externe speler werkt prima, en ziet er goed uit. Opnemen heb ik nog niet geprobeerd. (heb ik ook geen behoefte aan)

I have used another top brand product before buying this one. Honestly, two of them in a short period of gap.
That mean, the first one got repaired, and so I bought another. Guess what? Got the same result in a year.
That’s the reason I opted this on this occasion, and after using it for longer than the previous brand, I can easily say, it is the best one so for.
Best performance. Uses two usb plugins for a better power supply, especially it most needed during burning discs. While other use, one usb is enough.
